Steroids, also known as corticosteroids or anabolic-androgenic steroids (AAS), are synthetic substances that mimic the effects of naturally occurring hormones in the body, particularly cortisol and testosterone. Corticosteroids, such as prednisone, are commonly used in medicine to reduce inflammation and suppress immune responses in conditions like asthma, rheumatoid arthritis, and allergies. On the other hand, anabolic-androgenic steroids are synthetic derivatives of testosterone and are primarily used to promote muscle growth, enhance athletic performance, and improve physical appearance.
