Diazepam Addiction
Diazepam, commonly known by its brand name Valium, is a medication you may take to manage anxiety, muscle spasms, or symptoms of alcohol withdrawal. As a benzodiazepine, diazepam works by enhancing the effects of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), a neurotransmitter that helps regulate brain activity. This results in a calming effect on your central nervous system, reducing feelings of anxiety and promoting relaxation.
Despite its therapeutic benefits however, long-term or excessive use of diazepam that goes beyond your prescription guidelines, can lead to dependency, and eventually, a diazepam addiction.
